Does one of your teeth need crown or bridge, but there is too much gumline surrounding it? Or maybe you’d simply prefer to flash more of your pearly whites than your pink gingiva. Here at Periodontal Consultants in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Dr. Ali M Arastu and his team of experts are trained in crown lengthening, also called gum contouring. Here are a few FAQs:
What is crown lengthening?
Crown lengthening is a commonplace kind of surgery meant to unveil a more of your teeth.
What do we do to prepare?
You can plan on one or two preparation visits, during which Dr. Ali M Arastu will review your medical history and x-rays. Depending on your needs, you might have your teeth cleaned or get a temporary crown. When your teeth are ready, Periodontal Consultants will schedule the surgery.
What is surgery like?
Dr. Ali M Arastu will first give you anesthesia. Then he will make small cuts in your gum tissue and remove little bits of bone from your teeth roots. Finally, the surgical area will be sterilized and you will receive some gum stitches.
What will recovery look like?
Dr. Ali M Arastu will provide a prescription for a pain reliever and mouth rinse. We will give you special directions for your diet and oral hygiene. In order to reduce swelling, you will probably want to ice your face on and off for several hours. After a week, Dr. Ali M Arastu will carefully remove your stitches. Your gums will take about three months to heal. Periodontal Consultants may schedule follow-up visits to see the progression of your healing.
